If you are looking for a place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the city you found it. Out here the nights are dark, the stars are bright and the sounds of nature can be heard all around you. Baker County is country living at its best. No big city lights here. Surrounded by the St. Mary's River and the Osceola National Forest we are just a short twenty minute drive to downtown Jacksonville. The Osceola Forest is one of only four National Forest in the State of Florida and encompassess 200,000 acres. Twenty three acres of the incredible Florida Natural Scenic Trail is included in this forest and is home to many species of plant and wildlife. It is also the site of the historic Olustee Battlefield where the confederate soldiers pushed union troops back in route to Tallahasse, our State Capital. There is a reenactment held every February on President's Day weekend. The St. Mary's River is a remote blackwater stream that forms the easternmost border between southeastern Georgia and northeastern Florida. It begins deep within the Okefenokee Swamp and flows along a twisted 130-mile long path into the Cumberland Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. More than sixty five species of fish have been identified in the river including largemouth bass, panfish and catfish. For more information on the Osceola National Forest, The Olustee Battlefield or the St. Mary's River please visit the Maps and History Page of this website. There you will find links to websites and various maps of the community, forest and river. When you are here you are home. You can feel it all around you. It has to be the friendliest place I have ever known. Everyone waves, no one is in a hurry and the kindness of the residents is hard to beat. It feels like you have stepped back in time. Back to a time when people really cared about one another and went out of their way to lend a helping hand without expecting anything in return. We only have one High School, and it seems like the whole county shows up for the Wildcat football games. We usually have more people in the visitor stands at our away games than the home team. The town goes all out for the homecoming parade which is held in the heart of downtown Macclenny on US 90. !!!!!!GO CATS!!!!!! If you have children who play baseball you will definately be impressed by the Baker County Little League. Games are held at Knabb Field on Ohio Avenue. They have teams from four to sixteen year olds. It is a great place to be on Saturday afternoon, even if you don't have a child playing. The excitement is everywhere. Most of the residents of Baker County were born here and have seen a lot of changes in the past several years. Since 2000 the growth has escalated to 26,000 people. The county goverment has done a great job in managing the growth and seeing that we still maintain the country atmosphere that love so much. Christmas is a beautiful time in Baker County. All of downtown is lit up with beautiful lights and everyone awaits eagerly for the Christmas parade. Last years parade was the biggest yet. It must have lasted almost an hour. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many floats were in it. The streets were so packed families and friends that it was pretty hard to find a place to park your chair. This year I recommend getting there extra early if you want a good seat. If you are interested in taking a tour of our county we would be more than happy to show you around. We are located at 69 West Macclenny Avenue on the corner of SR121 and US90 right across from CVS Pharmacy. If you need directions please do not hesitate to give us a call at 904-259-9333. |
